Warning for would-be pirate watchers

Initial reports are that Ask A Ninja is right about "Pirates of the Caribbean II - Dead Man's Chest".

That is, if you want there to be a single, well-written, consistent, overarching plot that ties everything together into an exciting, fun movie, like in the first movie? Too bad.

Apparently they're reiterating the history of pirate movies. First, a really GOOD one. Then, a bunch of sloppily thrown-together, quick and dirty, unhappy scatterings of films that try but never succeed in bringing back the fun.

Beware.

Actually, I strongly disagree. Dead Man's Chest, although not a stand-alone movie (and good luck finding a stand-alone No. 2 of 3 movie), is a lot of fun. I'd say that it is at least as good as the first, and possibly even better, as the slight cringe factor towards the slapstick humour is gone. This movie is utterly unashamedly silly, pretty and fun.

I really enjoyed it, from start to finish (including the brief scene post-credits), and although it does end on a cliff-hanger/shameless hook for the next movie, this is no different to any number of No. 2 of 3 novels out there, and no-one berates them for not being sufficiently stand-alone.

This is not high culture, or a studied, nuanced exploration of the human condition, this is a rollicking good fun, shameless comedy/action film. Go in expecting it to be just what it is and you should have a great time.

And just why would anyone care what a Ninja says about a Pirate movie? Would you expect a Pirate to give a good review to a Ninja movie? (Leaving aside the fact that there are a lot more crap Ninja movies than crap Pirate ones.)

I would believe the ninja because, as he says, pirates are without honor and ninjas live for the stuff.

Besides, he liked the first movie.

I'll still see it, because, squidface, but I already had some doubts.

He's wrong and the snarky little comment-writers need to be drowned in their own drool. It was a great movie.

Hm. I liked Superman Returns enough to enjoy it in the face of a crazy-spiked blood sugar, constant nausea, and a really BAD seat in the wrong theatre to see it from, and yet people are sniping and pissing about it, and how wonderful PotC2 is in comparison.

So, if it's really that good, I'll agree that the Ninja is just jealous of the pirates.
