Food Bank Fundraiser is my downfall :)

The Episcopal Diocese of Oregon was a co-sponsor and organizer of a fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank that ran tonight. A number of restaurants and stores were collecting food donations, and McMenamins (at least, the Grand Lodge) had a special thing, 50% of the gross proceeds between 6pm and midnight went to the Food Bank.

So I've been planning to get together with Brad and Linda, and we agreed to do this one. The fried calamari was great (except for one giant squid-head that wasn't cooked) and the Buffalo Drumsticks were nice and not excruciating hot.
I had baby back ribs (half rack) with some sort of a raspberry glaze. The glaze was really over-caramelized (burnt) and the ribs were a bit dry, but still tasty. They also had blanched fresh green beans.
Linda had a rib steak, Brad had ... a different steak, I'm not sure which.
After talking one another's ears off, the waitress asked us if we wanted dessert, and we did.
Linda got the chocolate layer cake, which was chocolately and had a very nice presentation. Brad got the 'hearthstone bread pudding' which has a sauce made mostly from whiskey. I got a Terminator Chocolate Milkshake.

For those unfamiliar with Pacific Northwest microbrews, Terminator Stout is described on their page thusly:

The Terminator Chocolate Milkshake is a classic milkshake: vanilla ice cream and syrups and other flavors... In this case, a half pint of Terminator, Hershey's Syrup, ice cream, and that's it.

SO GOOD. SO INCREDIBLY GOOD.

I managed to only drink a bit less than half, and took the rest home in a coffee carry-out, to stick into the freezer for later. Much later. A couple days later at least. :)

We went to McMenamins when we visited some friends in Seattle some years ago. chronovius sampled the Terminator Stout. Yeah, that stuff is delightfully sinful.

Incidentally, I got carded.

Brad and Linda stared, a bit jawdropped, then laughed and told the waitress we had just celebrated my 50th birthday the weekend before last. She didn't believe it, and I showed her the card, and then B&L declared that they would sign affadavits and such that it did indeed happen.

I asked her the cutoff age, she said '35'.

Well, I suppose sometimes I look that young.

I sometimes watch "Five Years Younger" just to be boggled.

Getting Carded
In my late teen years, I would occasionally order low-alcohol drinks (mixed pansy-girl things, or spritzers), occasionally with my mom if we were having lunch together.

I never got carded.

I would be with groups of folks around my age, and 60-70% of them would get carded, but not me.

After I hit 27 or so, I get carded on occasion. Amuses the hell out of me :)

The carding algorithm is very strange.

And having children apparently makes one look at least 10 years older. :)

I have to say that never, ever would I order a milkshake that included beer as an ingredient. But if you say it's good, I'll take your word for it.
And I got carded about a month ago. I was so surprised I thanked the clerk.

It's not precisely _beer_ ... it's Porter Ale, which is to beer like malt whiskey is to vodka - much more flavor. That said, they also had a "Ruby Raspberry Milkshake" which was a similar recipe: their famous Ruby Ale, which was Penny's favorite and the only beer she ever really enjoyed the taste of, mixed with vanilla ice cream and a fresh raspberry compote.

The flavor of my shake was simultaneously very light, but very smokey and the chocolate flavors more intense than your usual chocolate malted.
