books and movies

Having the flu means not being able to concentrate as well as I want to, so I've been watching movies and reading and such.

I got "Old Man's War" by John Scaldi. INCREDIBLE book. I have a few 'but wait...' moments but in general it's just excellent. It helped that I wasn't quite as sick as I've been - I knew I'd have to stop reading if the temp hit 102. I read Mercedes Lackey's Last Herald-Mage series in one go when I had the flu many years back, and when the temp hit 106 and I was having the highly geometric highly mathematical nightmares of having to recursively fight off the forces of evil... ick. Thanks, I won't be doing that again.

I tried to watch Pirates of the Carribean 2 last night, but I had no focus left by then, so I went to sleep for a while and finished the book this morning. I am happy to see that the second book in that series is out now, and may even be out in paperback, and the third is out in hardback this year.

So this morning, the Hulk movie by Ang Lee was on Skiffy, so I watched it for a while, and realized that except for the ten or so minutes where the Hulk is actually acting like the Hulk, the movie really, really sucks. It wants robots mocking it.

I will either watch Pirates, or start copying my Red Dwarf tapes to DVD so I can loan the tapes to friends.
Although I'm beginning to think the DVD copy trick is not going to work well. The movies seem to be subjected to a quality reduction filter.

It does, however, have really _good_ dogs in it.

No, seriously. I know standard poodles, and that was a great standard poodle in it.

Oh, in Hulk? Yeah, I admired the quality of their acting. Gorgeous dogs.
