Yes, I was having an interesting time.

Actual pumpkins give more tactile resistance.
They're just as unforgiving though.

Well, we don't KNOW why. The report from a radio station on Friday was that the R-S had asked her to do a "gossip" column (i.e. dig up dirt on people) and she refused, so they canned her.

Doni did post a comment this morning attached to her last column from Wednesday:

Doni Greenberg here. This is not a hoax. I no longer work for the Record Searchlight.
On Wed., Oct. 24, Silas Lyons told me to get my things and leave. I returned the next day and emptied my desk.
I'll write more later. Believe it or not, for once I'm at a loss for words.
But I do want you to know how much I loved this job, and how much I appreciated the opportunity to be your local columnist. Thank you for the last 10 years.
Take care - Doni Greenberg

When I heard the news on Friday, I emailed the editor my displeasure, tacking on my feelings about the newspaper format in general (devoting one entire page to teenagers' photos of each other, extremely poor use of the front page - one third is large-print stories about how many calories in a Snickers bad, that sort of thing - and their poor monitoring of the comments on the website), and I just now got a reply:

Hi, and thanks for your note. I'm sorry it's taken a few days to get
back to you.

While I can't talk about Doni beyond saying that she's no longer here
and we wish her the best, I share your concern about the use of space
of
the front page. We're looking at some alternatives. And I assure you
we're still very much interested in journalism.

Again, thanks for taking the time to write.

Best,
Silas

I suspect Doni was made a victim: she's a Known Liberal against the war, and also came out in print against the Shasta County building a new courthouse (cost: Huge). potatomistress used to write a similar liberal column for the R-S and was also summarily fired, yet others who can't put a decent sentence together go on and on and on.

Gary called me last night and asked if I had seem Doni on the 6:30 local news, which I hadn't. He said she was interviewed and she said she is not the first person to be fired over the last six months since the new editor came in; all the people who were fired have been liberal. One of them, Greg Clark, went to high school with Penny & me, and had been at the R-S since he graduated college. He was passed over for promotion to editor when the last one left, in favor if this guy, who has not been there very long.

My subscription will not be renewed.
