We got Nixon instead.

George McGovern, who ran against Richard Nixon in 1972, has spoken out against not just the fact of war in Iraq, but also against the plans being formulated for a continued, extended war.

Next year is election year, and the pretender will be ousted. Let us hope this happens before he manages to make it a 'matter of national security' that he stay in power, not unlike Saddam Hussein did.

And don't think it beyond him.

I've been pondering the odds of just that happening, and it is depressing.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who thought of that.
It wouldn't even be that difficult. First, you declare martial law and postpone elections for several months until things can "settle down." Or not even declare martial law, just arrange some small disaster. Or high terror alert. That little forecast on the news channels, as if it were a tornado warning, creeped me out big time.

Anyway, you just postpone it a bit longer and eventually people forget they have the legal right to an election and are content in the moment/situation. They're trying to survive the terrorists, after all...
